Charity Partnership
HSK is a small, volunteer-run educational charity based in the UK. Working with Kenyan communities to improve educational opportunities, by providing school buildings and teaching materials. They have minimal overheads, with no paid staff or offices, so virtually all funds go direct to the projects in Kenya hsk.org.uk.
Working with BFE UK 2012
We invited HSK to join us on a campaign to build or remodel a school in Kenya with the help of our BSEC community. They exhibited at BSEC 2010 and 2011 and we promoted the programme through our normal marketing channels, encouraging people to visit the stand and donate their time, expertise or products.
The initiative was a great success resulting in some great conversations with the likes of top contractors including Carrillion, EC Harris, Skanska and Willmott Dixon alongside top architects, product suppliers and play equipment specialists.
HSK are BFE UK's official charity and we will continue to support them through our education events portfolio. MAKE A DONATION http://www.hsk.org.uk/donations
Working together...
BFE's very own Group Marketing Manager, Amie Willenberg, and colleague Mirabelle Chatterjee are leading a new initiative with Melville Exhibition and Event Services to donate much-needed money and goods from the events industry to local communities in the Kenyan capital.
Working with BFE's official charity, Harambee Schools Kenya (HSK), they have raised £5,000 in cash donations plus more than £50,000 in goods and services to improve education opportunities in Nairobi. Items include musical instruments, sports equipment, sewing machines, lawn mowers, desks, chairs and safes.
The projects
EBURRU PRIMARY SCHOOL, KENYA
Eburru is very remote, situated on an extinct volcano with no sources of employment. The community is extremely deprived and has an inadequate school for 672 pupils. There is one textbook for every 30 children. HSK has built a new classroom block, but the other classrooms urgently need renovation.
Recently the community had to demolish three classrooms built at low specification and in danger of collapsing during lessons. The other priority is the construction of a large water tank to provide much needed drinking water to pupils.
For Eburru, we urgently need cash donations for a new classroom
block and a new water tank. We are also interested in solar technology, innovative water harvesting technology, sustainable building approaches such as ISSB, and equipment such as furniture and ICT.
KEKOPEY SECONDARY SCHOOL, KENYA
Kekopey is an area next to a busy highway that badly needs an affordable secondary school to cater to the very large numbers of pupils in the area who are leaving primary school with no school to move on to.
We have already raised £60,000 to start the construction of this school, which is centered on a beautiful old colonial church. The local community has already constructed some temporary buildings, but work must begin soon on the permanent school buildings.
For Kekopey, we need to raise a further £60,000 to carry out building work, and we need a wide variety of school equipment as for Eburru (above).
In addition, we are able to distribute educational equipment such as computers to around 60 primary and secondary schools and polytechnics in this deprived area of Kenya. We will however need funds to cover the costs of distribution (especially road transport). We also need donations for other schools (such as £30,000 for a dining hall at Ngecho Secondary).
